The Tigers followed up last night’s dramatic come from behind - TopicsExpress

The Tigers followed up last night’s dramatic come from behind victory with another impressive win tonight beating the Tribe 5-1. As was the case last night the Tigers did all of their scoring in one inning. However prior to scoring all of their runs it looked like the Tigers had wasted a golden opportunity to put some runs on the board. This was also similar to last night’s game. In the top of the 2nd the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs. Fielder and Martinez drew lead off walks and then Don Kelley, we will discuss that later singled to right. However Justin Masterson, the Cleveland ace then struck out Avila and Inglesias and got Santiago to ground out. In the bottom of the inning the Tribe was able to get the only run they would get on this night. Asdrubal Cabrera led off with a double. He went to 3rd on Michael Brantley’s single. While Cabrera was then thrown out at the plate when Santana grounded out to Fielder, Cabrera and Santana were able to move up to 2nd and 3rd respectively on the run down play. Brantley then scored on a ground out by Rayburn. Last night the Tiger offense went to work in the 9th. Tonight they did not wait as long and did it in the 5th. Santiago led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. He went to 3rd on a hit and run single by Jackson. Hunter then hit into a fielder’s choice. It was Hunter’s hustle that would beat the throw to 1st and avoid the double play. Santiago scored on the play. Hunter would then score on a double by Cabrera, his 100th RBI of the year. Martinez was then hit on the ankle by a pitch. This brought up Kelly. He was inserted by manager Leyland on a hunch and it paid off when Kelly hit a pitch into the right field seats for a 3 run homer. This put the Tigers up 5-1. Justin Verlander took over from here. This was the Justin we had waited for all year. He stopped the Tribe on 4 hits over 8 innings and struck out 7 and walked none. There was nothing more impressive then the 6th inning. Cleveland got runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, but JV stuck out Kipnis and got Cabrera to ground out. Jose Veras wrapped up the victory pitching the 9th and getting the Tribe 1, 2, 3. With the victory the Tigers assured themselves of no worse than a split in this show down series. They increased their lead over the Tribe to 5 games. Maybe most important, if tonight is any indication the Tiger got the old JV back. Fister goes for the Tigers tomorrow night.
