The Upper Hunter will be putting on its best face next week as the Tidy Towns assessor checks out our projects on the ground 4-6 August. The Tidy Towns assessor will be at the Murrurundi Visitor Information Centre on Monday morning meeting with Council representatives and the Landcare Tidy Towns Committee, then looking at the Murrurundi portal murrurundi.nsw.au, the Pages River rehabilitation, The Pioneer Cottage, Community Litter Grant site at the entrance to town, World War I exhibition and touring the town for the overall assessment. The assessor will be in Scone on Tuesday 9am at Home Timber and Hardware Scone which is nominated for the Sustainable Business Award, at Scone High School at 11am to meet with Jake Speck nominated for the Young Legends Awards and at 2pm at the Council’s Scone Chambers to hear about the 2013 Rural Womens Gathering nominated in the Community Actions and Partnerships category. On Wednesday they are looking at the Aberdeen Urban Roads Rehabilitation Project with Council Works Engineer Tony Swallow. It’s Devils Ark at Barrington Tops in the afternoon which is nominated for the Conservation Partnerships Wildlife Corridors and Habitat Conservation Award. The Shire has done well in the past. Towns in the Upper Hunter Shire swept up a swag of awards in the 2013 Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Tidy Towns competition. Aberdeen placed second in the overall town category for populations between 1201 and 4000. In the town’s first entry to the awards, Moonan Flat placed third in the new town category. Scone was awarded a Highly Commended for the Devil Ark project in the Wildlife Corridors and Habitats category. Murrurundi again did very well this year, winning two Highly Commended places recognising the Pages River Walk and litter reduction at the town’s southern entry. Murrurundi also placed second in the overall category for populations between 351 and 1200.
