The Washoe County Sheriffs Office joined the Nevada Highway Patrol, Reno Police Department and Sparks Police Department in a late-summer Joining Forces DUI Enforcement campaign. From August 25 through September 7, 2014, the Sheriffs Office and other participating agencies conducted around the clock saturation patrols aimed at saving lives by enforcing DUI laws. The following results are from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office portion of the campaign: Sheriffs Office patrol staff assigned to this two-week Joining Forces campaign initiated a total of 234 traffic stops. Ten of those stops resulted in DUI arrests. Although a driver may be stopped for one violation, several other violations may be observed during the subsequent investigation making it possible that a driver may be issued citations for numerous violations. The total number of violations cited and warnings issued during this event was 311. Violations cited by the Sheriffs Office include: 10 DUI arrests 39 for speeding 41 for cell phone use or other distracted driving 22 for failure to show proof of insurance 26 drivers license related violations 16 motor vehicle registration violations 33 vehicle equipment violations 10 for running a red light 1 reckless driving 1 seatbelt violation 4 fugitive warrant arrests 3 for failing to yield the right of way 21 all other citations 84 warnings Sheriff’s Office participation in this Joining Forces DUI enforcement campaign was made possible by grant funding received from the Nevada Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety. Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program that promotes statewide enforcement in the areas of: DUI, distracted driving, seat belt, and speed and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.
