The acid attack victim, who is struggling to regain her vision at AIIMS, still refuses to believe that the crime was plotted by her close friend of over 10 years. The lady doctor was attacked with acid and left screaming in pain in the middle of a road in Rajouri Garden on a chilly December 24 morning. But the ordeal has not ended as the victims father is pained that she has failed to come to terms with the reality. In an interview to Mail Today, victims father, a DIG in Border Security Force, said, I cant tell you much about her or Dr Ashok Yadav (accused) as whatever I say will be without her consent. She still has her apprehensions. She thinks it could be someone else. She still believes he could not have done that to her. Confession On Friday, Yadav, the mastermind of the crime and senior doctor at an ESIC Hospital, was produced in court and remanded in one-day police custody. This was after he was arrested and confessed to having been in love with her and angry at her impending marriage. He told his interrogators, main usko sabak sikhana chahta tha (I wanted to teach her a lesson). The victim had, on the contrary, threatened to withdraw the case in the initial days if the police questioned her best friend. But the police did not give up their line of investigation convinced with the fact that the use of a syringe pointed to the involvement of a medical professional and her pending marriage could mean that it is a case of failed romance. Both had met while studying medicine in a college in Belarus, Russia, and later started working in the same ESIC Hospital as senior residents in Delhis Basai Dara Pur. The accused developed feelings for her and proposed to marry but the woman declined. They still remained friends but his passion got inflamed once again when he learnt of her marriage being fixed. On the fateful morning, two men, hired and personally trained by Yadav, waylaid the victim while she was on her way to the hospital. With the help of a syringe, they sprayed acid on her face. Her half-an-hour-long ordeal and cries for help were recorded in a CCTV camera located on the way. The father, whose eyes clearly betrayed that he hasnt slept since the incident, said, Yadav was present in the hospital till the police zeroed in on him. My daughter never suspected that he had such strong feelings for her or that he could do this. We dont know what will happen to Yadav or his friends, said the weary father on being asked what punishment he wants for them. We havent switched on the TV or read newspapers since then. All that we hear about them is from our relatives and friends, he added. We are content with how the case is proceeding so far. We have faith in the police and courts and that the case will reach its right conclusion, the BSF DIG, accompanied by his official staff, said. The victim underwent an eye surgery on December 24 night. Doctors attending to her at AIIMS said she is doing better now. In spite of several surgeries and treatment, there is a realistic possibility that she could lose her right eye, Dr Amit Gupta, spokesperson, AIIMS, had earlier told the media. She is likely to undergo a plastic surgery as well. All that we care about now is the well-being of our daughter. She is slightly better after the eye surgery, he said. Along with Yadav, the court also remanded another accomplice to 14 days of judicial custody. The other two accused involved have claimed to be minors and the police is ascertaining their age with the help of documents they have made available.
