The annual debate about the merits of winter summer time is with us again. When we were little, my mum used to set the clock 5 minutes fast in the hope that we would leave in time to catch the school bus. Since then, Ive always been sceptical about a nanny state that tries to change our behaviour by tampering with our clocks. In fact, it amazes me that people are prepared to put up with it. If they simply told us to get up an hour earlier and go to bed an hour earlier, there would be riots. Are people that easily deceived? Its time we got rid of timezones entirely, had a single universal time all around the world, and then adapted our behaviour to make the best use of what limited daylight we have available, by adjusting office hours, school hours, and the like.
