The biggest cot I ever saw in my life, middle of the road, meant - TopicsExpress

The biggest cot I ever saw in my life, middle of the road, meant for poor rickshaw pullers on the streets of Amristar in Punjab. Just few yards away from the famous eating out joint called kesar da dabha. 1: First about dhaba: The unique point of this dhaba is that it is the oldest opening in 1917. Since that day, a handful of kali dal prepared everyday is mixed with the nest day preparation. the belief is that the first creation is still carried forward. the food here is yummy and filthy rich of the city or entire punjab after visiting the great golden temple seldom give a miss to the dhaba. Amazing place, third generation on the cash counterand the same warmth of the earlier generation, people say. 2: Now about the cot, which is called Manza in punjabi. meant for all those who are tired and want to take a small snooze in the afternoon after pulling rickshaw or hard work. in south we used to have a place outside the house called "thinnai", made of concrete and passerby generally sleep in the noon hours or night. Otherwise it is the gup shup table in the evening. My maternal grandmother used to keep left over food in that "thinnai" with some butter milk and some "achar". The transit passengers going from small village to near by town used to take a halt in our place called kumbakonam bus terminus (600 kms away from madras w chennai) and used to eat that left over food, wash the vessel and keep it in the same place and go. those days hotels never operated after 8.pm. bus stopped plying after 9.pm and restart at 5.am. the option was only these "thinnais" but very few used to offer food. As a kid i used to think dog ate the food but used to wonder how they washed the vessel! Then my grandmother told the story. Some time we found rice bag lying outside out house when we open the door early morning at 5.30.am. Those rice bags are gifts from those passersby who never had food to eat in hotels and ate our left overs. What a nice gesture of those days!!! I wonder if anybody in these days does something like this. Please write to me. Happy joy of giving week. giving should never get weak!
