The biggest failure of the American Public School System in my - TopicsExpress

The biggest failure of the American Public School System in my opinion is the reliance of standardized testing to place children on career paths in elementary school. There should not be a hierarchy to education. The standardized tests tells more about economic background and exposure than it does the ability to learn. To be real about it, poor kids are put into a education path that will keep them poor while more affluent kids are put on a path of success. This is even more problematic for ethnic minorities. Ethnic minorities usually come from underprivileged backgrounds. Some may even have language or cultural differences that make it difficult to score well on standardized tests. There are some REAL educators that have proven those tests are crap. They take kids deemed as failures or inadequate and turn them into scholars. I was lucky enough to have college educated parents that were able to expose me to a lot of things as a child. I had a mother that was adamant about grammar/diction and a father that had the ability to take us on educational road trips. More importantly, I had an extended family of educators that made sure I stayed in a nurturing learning environment. However, some children dont have that luxury. The schools should be providing that.
