The current Board of Education in Douglas County would like you think that this election is all about us vs the Union. I am here to tell you otherwise. First of all, for many years my name was not exactly spoken with reverence among the Union leadership. I was an administrator who saw things from a different point of view. And while the union and I occasionally came into conflict, it was never ugly, never confrontational (except once when the Union had an idiot for a negotiator, but thats another story), and always respectful. So when I ran for the school board in 2004 and the Union chose to endorse my opponent (ask them how they feel now about that call. Yuk! yuk!), I was not surprised. Thats business. And I have since forgiven them. No. Take it from me. This election is definitely not about preserving the teachers union. Its about preserving neighborhood schools. I want to see the traditions continue that have led to such tremendous success in the past. Kids attend neighborhood schools where the parents, teachers and administrators work together to make their schools better right there at the local, neighborhood level. We need to put resources into neighborhood schools, not voucher programs that funnel taxpayer money to private and parochial schools. Thats why Im voting to throw the current Board members out and put some reason back into the Douglas County School District.
