The current USA government shutdown highlights the significant difference between a republic and a constitutional monarchy. When Australia faced the same situation in 1975 after the Senate refused to pass the Prime Minister’s finance bills, the Governor General (as representative of the Queen) was able to step in to avert the current USA situation. Rather than have a government shutdown, the Governor General “shut down” the Prime Minister, installed the alternate Prime Minister, and ordered fresh elections to let the people decide. For Australia, it was business as usual . . . No shutdown . . . and life went on as normal. Give me a Constitutional Monarchy over a republic, any day. Three cheers for Australia’s constitutional monarchy! :-)
