The difference between a two year olds temper tantrum and a four year olds hissy fit is that four year olds actually have fairly well-developed powers of human speech! So four year olds are fully capable of and willing to hurl insults at you even as they carry on with the crying and wailing. The thing is a four year olds insults can be quite hilarious. How can you stay mad or even just keep a straight face when she has just screamed with all the venom she can muster, You are a poopy head! And then she slams the door to her room. How can you stay mad? The key is to think like a four year old. If you were to call a four year old poopy head, they are likely to take up arms against you. And if they have the nuclear codes, God help you. So perhaps it is better to fake grave outrage at being called a poopy head so she feels you have acknowledged her umbrage.... Aaaah the joys of fatherhood....
