The events of today in Cairns prompt me to write this post for those struggling to deal with and understand the events of today. Those of you who know me well know I worked in child protection for 10 years. Some of you know I served on the Child Death Review Committee for 5 of those. (pausing there to acknowledge Jamie Coburn for his long and child focused service in that space). I thought I might say a few things for those not so accustomed to the events of the day. these are some personal thoughts that have sustained me through some very dark lonely moments in this work. To my colleagues in CP past and present, we know we cant save them all, some days despite leaving it al on the field evil prevails. To those in the public who want to join the would have, should have could have chorus, dont be so naive, over 500 children die annually most from care accidents, drowning and health conditions, fewer than 1% from fatal assault. Thats not to diminish any death as tragedy. To those struggling to understand why, you will never, with a rational mind fathom the irrational mind. If you can not understand, take comfort, thats a good thing, your mind is still intact. To the police and Ambos who attended, thank you for your courage and your service thank you for going into hell for the rest of us we pray for strength and healing for you all.
