If the United States had used their own Aircraft, rather than buying proven european designs, they probably would have been flying a Curtiss Triplane, the S-3. The Baron actually got most of his 80 victories in the Albatross, not the Triplane. He got about 18 of the 80 in the DR1. Had he lived another month he would have switched over to the Fokker DVII.
