The following questions were received through the Joint Task Force Carson Humanitarian Mission Ebola Hotline at media.carson.army.mil/ebola/default.aspx. Q. My son was scheduled for leave next week and has paid for tickets. He is being told leave is not cancelled but he will not be able to sign out on leave. He needs documentation to cancel his flight and to get his ticket reimbursed. What can he do to ensure that he is not out several hundred dollars if he cannot get the airline tickets cancelled? A. Your Soldier will receive TCS (Temporary Change of Station) orders which he can use for airline ticket reimbursement. If Soldier has difficulties resolving his issue, have him contact his unit chain of command. Q. Will they be able to go into the towns/villages? A. At this time, there isnt a plan to allow our Soldiers to visit the civilian towns. However, some of their missions may require them to enter the towns. In the event their work brings them to areas where there is a risk of contracting Ebola, U.S. military personnel will follow the protection guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and if needed, will be issued appropriate personnel gear. Q. During the Soldiers time in Africa, will they be protected by a perimeter? A. Yes, the safety of our personnel is our highest priority. The Army has a force protection plan of action to ensure the safety of our Soldiers. Our Soldiers are trained on protection, prevention, detection and treatment of the Ebola virus. Q. Is there any way for the Family to communicate with the Soldiers when deployed to Africa? Nine months is a long time without hearing any word from them. A. We are committed to keeping our Soldiers, Family Members, and the Fort Carson community informed. This is a different and more austere environment than other deployments. Internet and commercial phone will not be as readily available as other locations we deployed in the past. The mail service system will be slower as well. Communications will be sparse at the beginning. Ensuring that our Soldiers remain connected to their love ones is important, and we will work within this environment to facilitate the communication between our Soldiers and their Families back home.
