The founders never intended for Washington DC to be the resort of first choice when it comes to problem solving, indeed its Constitutional authority is very limited in regards to what it can do legally! What it can do, and its proven without doubt, is to screw things up! As President Ronald Reagan said, Washington isnt the solution, its the problem! The complaint often seems to be centered around partisanship and a do nothing Congress! For those who complain and wish theyd all just get along and pass more laws, I say NUTS! Gridlock is the way the system was designed, it was intended to be that way...rarely are we presented with a situation that cant stand public debate and the light of day, I believe that is a good thing! It is the back room deals, the incentives under the table, the lack of transparencey and the rush to give the appearance of doing something that ultimately leads to bad law. Just look at the Patriot Act, for example, in the heat of the moment, our Representatives trampled our Constitutional Liberty, not the least of which is our rights under the 4th Amendment., one of the most egregious acts in decades! Every law they pass is given a title that seems innocuous, of course that is by design...after all, who can be against Affordable Care or Patriotism? No member of Congress wants to be in that position, that too, is intentional. It is my hope that we can actually buy time over the next two years, and bail enough water to keep the ship of state afloat, and that is perhaps my most optimistic wish! That means that those of you lobbying for Congress to pass more spending laws and raise the debt limit are the focus of my attention.....is there ever a point when too much, is actually too much? Who among us thinks this can continue forever, that no consequence will ever result form our profligate spending? We need to do more than business as usual, we need to do a 180 degree turn, and frankly I dont even see that on the horizon! I just read an article talking about priorties that must be addressed in this lame duck session on the top of the list was, lifting the debt limit, and of course well here the same old rhetoric about, nuckle draggers wanting to turn the clock back and we have an obligation to pay our bills and the one I really like, it would be irresponsible not to raise it! Makes me think real change will never happen....until? Until the water starts to flow over the sides of the deck and those relaxing in their lounge chairs are washed away, until those in the lounge look down and discover that their feet are now under two feet of water, until the life boats are filled with first class passengers and its discovered that there arent enough boats....were on the Titanic and that little blip on the radar screen is, you guessed it....an Iceberg, the vast majority of which lies deep beneath the surface, but what you dont see, just yet, anyway...is impending disaster! There comes a moment when avoiding the Iceberg is no longer possible, and that moment is before contact is ever made! The question is, are we past that moment? I dont have a first class ticket and Im assuming most of you dont either!
