The harder it is for an opponent to see you, the better your chance of coming home with all of your parts intact. Of the six basic environments, the soldier can be expected to operate in all six. Aquatic, tropical rain forest, woodland, temperate woodland, arctic, and desert. That means a minimum of six different battle dress uniforms. Add to that the fact that the opposition trains to recognize our uniforms, and additional patterns make it more difficult for even a trained observer to spot you, and you have a solid reason for continuing research. Uniformity is the battle cry of bureaucratic bean counters that think they can save a nickel. Usually at the soldiers expense.
