The head of the BC Teachers Federation says the full scale strike - TopicsExpress

The head of the BC Teachers Federation says the full scale strike planned for Tuesday is still imminent, after a weekend of bargaining. Jim Iker says their executive will meet later today to discuss the strike situation, but he indicated the full strike is still on. Iker expressed disappointment with talks this weekend, which ended around midnight Sunday night. Iker says the union offered a 5-year deal with an 8% overall salary increase. That brings them to within about one percentage point from the government’s position. The BCTF also asked for a $5-thousand dollar signing bonus, up from $1200 offered by the government. But Iker says there’s still not enough movement on the class size and composition. In fact, he accused the government of “scheming” and “backtracking” on that issue. Teachers from around Southern Vancouver Island will be rallying on the Legislature lawn this afternoon at 1 pm. Their goal is to call on the government to bargain in good faith.
