The historical inaccuracies here are beyond disheartening. To add, Artemisia fought with the Persians because she was part of the Persian empire, which was always multicultural, multracial, multi ethnic, and and even multi lingual. The Spartans and Greeks raided bordering territories, repeatedly, the Empire had to respond, Artemisia was part of that response, not by force or a desire for vengence, but rather through choice and I suspect duty. Had the Greeks not been raiding, the war would not have happened. The Greeks were democratic only for the non slaves, large parts of their society consisted of slaves with no rights, important to remember that since the film insists that the zenith of democray in the west now is modeled after the Greeks (roll eyes), trust me, that would NOT be a good thing! Persians had no slaves, in fact it was repulsive and sinful in their religion of Zoroastrianism, the only religion that banned slavery. The Persian military was mercenary (all were paid), and had members of many nationalities, races, ethnicities and it even included women. Greek women couldnt even dream of serving in a military with severely restrcited rights. The Spartans were brave in their fight, but the society and ideals they represented were nothing to idealize today or ever!
