The husband and I did the usual and went to vote at Hilo HS. (For those of you that dont know, the husband has multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair.) There is one accessible parking stall near the building we need to get to (plenty in the main parking lot but there are no visible ramps, just stairs, from that area). Today, two service vehicles had parked adjacent to the ONE accessible stall in such a way they blocked access to the sidewalk to get into the building. We had to go up and around, through a small mud puddle to get to where we needed to go. As we where checking in, I had told a polling place worker about the problem. She proceeded to check us in and not even flinch. I asked for the site coordinator and was told they are right there but they seem busy. I told another worker and he politely said he would bring it to their attention. We proceeded to vote. As soon as I was done, I checked the service vehicles and they were still there. I asked a third worker and he laughed and said, Those arent even our vehicles. Those belong to Hilo High. Someone else chimed in to say, If we had keys, wed move them. That is all the response I received after making several inquiries. First of all, a little compassion goes a long way. Not a single person working at the site apologized for the inconvenience or the lack of the ability to be proactive. Second, shouldnt the site coordinator have checked the polling site? Seriously, this place has ONE accessible stall for wheelchairs- it should have been on the checklist. Third, Hilo HS workers- or whomever- should know better. Dont block accessible parking and walkways. This was a few hours ago and Im done being pissed. This is just disappointing. The Elections Commission and Hilo HS will be hearing from a much calmer version of me tomorrow. I hope.
