The importance of secondary routes in an emergency was never - TopicsExpress

The importance of secondary routes in an emergency was never better illustrated than on the Dublin - Maynooth - Longford- Sligo line over the past 24 hours. Due to flooding on the up line near Drumcondra all Dublin-bound services have been diverted from Glasnevin Junction to Connolly via the ex-MGWR Liffey Branch and Newcomen Junction. And this line was closed for a number of years prior to its reinstatement for the Docklands-M3 Parkway services in 2010. While it is inconvenient for many that up trains cannot serve Drumcondra, there would be no trains running between Sligo/Maynooth today only for the Newcomen Route. Well done Iarnród Éireann for having the foresight to re-open this vital link to the City. And while many of us commuters may be inconvenienced by the delays, please let us spare a thought for the staff who have been working in the most inclement of weather over the past 24 hours attempting to put matters right. They are the unsung heroes of the Railway in my book. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir.
