The key to effective feedback is observation, rather than judgment. This kind of objective observation takes time and practice. Teachers like to say You did a great job doing X. While I encourage teachers to stick closely to objective assessment, praise statements are fine, as long as they are accompanied by important observations and questions, which generate conversation. The goal should be to have students offer opinion about their work. I used to say things like, You dont appear to know the setting. I realized later that the student might know it and that I should just ask. Theres no subjectivity at all in the redirect and resubmit sections. These are simple requests that traditional grades omit. Are you able to provide this kind of feedback? What stumbling blocks have you encountered?
