The miniature who died was confirmed to have been infected with Clostridium perfringens, type A. The other miniature from the same farm will need to be treated with longer term antibiotics to ensure complete kill. Right now his white cells and fibrinogen are quite elevated. He is eating and drinking well on his own. Cl. perfringens is a bacteria that does not like oxygen, so is considered an anaerobic bacteria, and it lives in the intestinal tract of the horse. When the bacterial population gets altered, for whatever reason, it can over grow and produce a lot of toxin, causing illness.
