The next generation of TV technology will be what OS your TV - TopicsExpress

The next generation of TV technology will be what OS your TV plays. So far weve got Roku, WebOS and FireFox OS. No one wants to build custom apps for their TVs if you can just go for a standardized OS that developers can build against. LG does WebOS while Panasonic just announced their TVs are going to do FireFox OS. Weve also got those low-cost Chinese TVs running Roku (the so-called Roku TV). When Google gets Chrome on someones TVs, its going to be killer (Im looking at you, Samsung). All the while, Apple is watching the market pass them by for the Apple TV. And Tivo would be smart to start adapting their platform to smart TVs as well, or run the risk of becoming an also-ran. Standardization is whats going to save TV apps. Eventually, TV manufacturers become bored with their old apps and stop improving and upgrading them. If your TV is running an OS thats going to be used long into the future, then the apps that are developed for new TVs are just as likely to run on old TVs with the same OS.
