The notion of intelligent design is interesting to me, but not for the reason that the proponents of the theory think it is. Depending on how you define your terms (and thats where that theory is wide open), I think a good case can be made that evolution IS intelligent design. The process of evolution might be intelligent in some very meaningful sense. in fact, it may be far more intelligent than we are, since our intelligence is merely a product of it. Evolution is not a simple process of reproduction-mutation-selection, because those processes operate on the processes of reproduction, mutation, and selection themselves. Thus, evolution is a self-referential process, just as consciousness is. Genetic reproductive processes seem to have mutation deliberately built into them in a way that optimizes the balance between adaptability and stability, as has been studied by Sally Goerner, Stuart Kaufmann, and other biological scientists. Goerner finally concluded that intelligence is distributed diffusely throughout the universe (loose paraphrase). So, without a clear definition of the words intelligent and design, I would argue that evolution is both.
