[The]... offerings of the faithful [in the early Jerusalem church - TopicsExpress

[The]... offerings of the faithful [in the early Jerusalem church in Acts] were completely voluntary. Peter said it very clearly to Ananias [Acts] 5:4. The difference between the Jerusalem’s Church and Communism is that the latter say, Yours is mine, while Christians say, Mine is Yours. And it is no small difference! Equally important is it to recognize that it is not about equality. Distribution was done to everyone’s needs. Paul puts it this way in 2 Corinthians 8:15: Those with a lot, have not had too much, and those with a little, not too little. Certainly these verses address our selfish and materialistic lives. No believer can escape his responsibility to investigate his priorities seriously in the light of these verses. And if it does not lead to profound adjustments, flashing red lights go off on our love for our brothers and sisters, and our devotion to Jesus Christ. Truly, few things will one day be so relentlessly testify against us as our many possessions and our self-indulgent and extravagant lifestyle. Nico Van der Walt
