The ongoing work to increase the amount of the comparatively cheaper geothermal power on the national grid is spot on. This is because the high cost of power remains one of the biggest impediments to improving Kenya’s business environment and ultimately the country’s competitiveness. Kenya has traditionally relied on hydro-electric power that in good times accounts for up to 70 per cent of all the power consumed in the country. However, the fact that hydro-electric power is mainly produced by river water whose volumes depend on the amount of rainfall has left Kenya greatly exposed to weather shifts. Consumers are, however, taking comfort in the fact that the Energy ministry, while managing expectations in the wake of last year’s tariff increment, promised the coming on board of some 140 megawatts of geothermal power by end of next month that would set the country off to the era of cheap electricity. Well, that time is drawing closer and consumers, especially the industrialists whose tariff bands went up by the highest margins, can only expect the minister and his team to stand by their words and deliver on their promise. It is now the countdown to the D-Day and everyone is watching.
