The original Farm House in which you are dining tonight was built in 1828. The matriarch of the farmstead was Hester Catherina Vermaak. Her portrait is in the main lounge to the right of the bay window. Hester farmed here for 40 years. During this time she married twice. Firstly, to a Mr Anthony Vermaak and then to a Mr Henry Atrill. Hester was unable to have children of their own and subsequently adopted 3 children. Amongst these was her niece, Blanche. Blanche’s portrait hangs to the left of the bay window in the lounge. Henry, her second husband was killed by an elephant on the farm. Hester loved to entertain and her table was always full of guests and laden with good food and the house warmed by hospitality. Many evenings were spent in the lounge area dancing the nights away Hester sadly passed away, however her love for this house and this land was met in eternity by her being buried next to her two husbands on the plain in the front of the house, just past the waterhole. The private dining area next to where you are dining tonight was Hester’s bedroom. This is where she passed away and often Hester will be seen walking through the lounge and the dining areas of the Farm house. She still watches over her guests and we the staff and current Matriarch of the Farm house always spare a moment to greet her and wish her well as she passes by. Please join us tonight, on Old Hallows eve, as we gather around the dining table and celebrate the hospitality of the Gorah I am sure that Hester will join me in bidding you a fair welcome and Bon Appetite Happy Halloween Louise
