The peaceful town of Maheshwar(91 km from Indore) in Madhya Pradesh comes to life to commemorate its beloved Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar’s birthday. Born on 31 May 1725, Ahilyabai Holkar ruled as Queen of the Holkar Dynasty for 28 years. Often referred to as Philosopher Queen, she moved her capital to Maheshwar and built various sacred sites and temples in around her capital andoutside her kingdom. Her birthday is still celebrated with pomp and valour in her capital town of Maheswar. A glass-cased life-size statue of Maharani is kept at the Maheshwar palace, which is the central point of the fort. Traditions Starting from the Shiva temple with the golden Lingam, which is close-by to the Maheshwar Palace, the procession with a portrait of Maharani upon a palanquin that is carried by a set of four bearers goes around the entire town of Maheshwar.
