[The pictures are of the two Queens - can there be such a thing!? - Dan Galletti, guitarist of one of the challengers in the Road to Memphis Blues Challenge, the Smokers Blues Band, and Justin Robbins of the Justin Robbins Blues Band and an all-around nice guy] Caregiving is always a labor of love and on this Labor Day there needs to be a celebration honoring all of us who provide as best as we can a good quality of life for our loved one. Over these last months getting to know caregivers, patients and caring family and friends it is quite apparent this would never be considered “labor” by any of us. However, in the eyes of researchers and statisticians the serving we do does count as labor, if for no other reason than that caregiving takes the caregiver out of the labor market. But for today we get to enjoy having free time with that loved one. Here in eastern Iowa the Sun just broke through the clouds after a good rain that lasted on and off for five-plus hours. The lovely patient was so worn out from the weekend she slept for exactly twelve hours before awakening at 4:30 a.m. ready to be helped out of bed. Weve managed to stay up these last four hours but she is definitely feeling the twin effects of the low pressure system and the fatigue. She already asked for additional medication and that is a sure sign the Beast rarin its ugly head. A few words about the fundraiser. It was a most wonderful experience. The number of people we met and with whom we discussed Multiple System Atrophy was in the dozens, the people who came by and simply donated dollars was in the double digits and the number of blues aficionados who came by to just share their love was – well, off the charts. We had blues musicians stop by and with two MSA patients sitting together talking when they wanted but enjoying each others company they were able to see and hear first hand how the disease effects people. Raising awareness was the top goal of this fundraiser and we hope the cards and information sheets with which booth visitors left will make their way into others hands and maybe MSA will begin to get a little attention. There were many good pictures taken during the event and they will soon be collated and shared in a slide album. However, today I want to share several from Saturday. The weather was much more cooperative and that made for some good smiles all around. One picture you see is of my Queen and Laurie Morvan, who proclaimed on the stage she will happily be the Illinois Queen. There cannot be two Queens so guess whose gonna have to wait her turn. Anyway, enjoy your day, its okay, and keep the blues at bay! What do you say?
