The president is the civilian commander-in-chief. As the chairman - TopicsExpress

The president is the civilian commander-in-chief. As the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff explained to Ronald Reagan when he asked if it was okay for him to salute in civilian clothes, Youre the commander-in-chief. You can do anything you want. No president saluted before Reagan, especially not Eisenhower, a former general, who considered it improper to salute out of uniform. Its not required, its not technically proper, and the man in that office has a hell of a lot more to think about than this picayune crap. Mr. Obama has treated his military aides and guards with great respect throughout his terms. I daresay few of the people complaining complained when one of the Bushes missed a salute. I say this as an 8-year veteran of the Marine Corps. Lighten up, folks.
