The race baiting just goes on and on, so I have decided to share a very personal story from the early 60s to show another side of the debate. I was employed to run a night class at a Trade School in downtown Houston helping girls learn to keypunch (for those of you that care, that was a forerunner in accounting to the computer of today). The class was largely black women and it was a time of segregation. There were separate bathrooms, businesses, buildings; everything you can image, it was separate. It was the way of the world then and people just accepted it as normal as it was all we knew. The black girls had to walk to the bus station to use their restrooms as the building we were in had locked restrooms for whites only. Of course, my employers had given me a key with instructions not to open the restrooms to the black class members, no matter what as their rental agreement contained this restriction clause. One night it was raining, really raining as it does in Houston and several of the girls started to leave on their break. One of the older women (who had an attitude about all things in life) jumped me about them having to get wet outside just to use the restrooms as SHE KNEW I had the key and could let them in the ones inside the building. Several of the other girls tried to sush her but she just got nasty with me after that happened. I explained what my instructions were and that it would be my job as well as the schools loss of premises if I let them have the key. I went home and spoke to my stepdad and mom about the situation at school. Mom was worried that I might get hurt; my stepdad just said he thought I would do the right thing if it happened again. It rained the very next night and I gave the students the bathroom key. The next morning I went to the school and quit, explaining that I had given the students the bathroom key and could not make those girls walk in the bad weather on their breaks. They were human just like me and God loved them also. My story is not unique as plenty of whites have helped make changes in our communities. The problem is that once a person is a victim and dependent, there is never enough done for them and they will never be satisfied. By lowering our standards to be inclusive of everyone, we have cheated our children of all colors of the pride of achievement. The Golden Rule is do onto others as you would have them do unto you. I very much doubt any minority business owner would appreciate white people who looted and robbed their businesses as we have seen done recently by angry blacks. We are ALL Americans, lets get back to the business of creating opportunities for all our children and quit the hatred.
