The reason for the prohibition of shaking hands with unrelated women ! Why did Islam forbid shaking hands with women for a man who is not a Mahram for them? Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-`Uthaymeen(r ahimullah) answered this question as follows : Islam forbade this because it is a trial and a temptation (Fitna) of the greatest kind for a man to touch the skin of woman who is not related to him. Everything which leads to trials and temptations has been prohibited by Allah. This is why Allah(azza wa jal) commanded us to avert our gaze, in order to avoid corruption. Fatwa Islamiyah Vol:5 page no.111. We have been shown in Quran the concept of Mahram and Non mahram .Well, it is no doubt one of the most important issues of THE TEACHINGS OF ISLAMIC SOCIETY. But unfortunately it’s the most neglected area today. ISLAM has laid a great stress on to this point, whose clear cut proof we can easily find out in SURAH NISA, SURAH NOOR AND IN SURAH AHZAB. The Prophet Muhammed (sallallahu alayhe waalihi wasallam) said, It is better for one of you to be pierced by an iron needle in the head than to touch the hand of a woman that is not allowed to him. (Tabarani). Likewise,Muslim women should also consider about their actions and should not allow any non-mahram to shake hands with her and any kind of physical contact.
