The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Fayette Square in Martinsville Uptown took place this morning. The project was spearhead by the City of Martinsville and New College Institute interns adopted the space as part of their summer civic engagement project. The results are fantastic! The mural at the park features a depiction of the June German Ball, a musical celebration that once hosted many prominent African-American musicians including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles and more. The Fayette Area Historical Initiative (FAHI) has revived the event to continue the tradition.
