The rules of etiquette for eating breads are: Bread is broken or cut before it is eaten. Consideration is given to the texture: is it soft or firm, the temperature: is it hot or room temperature, and the shape: is it long and narrow or small and sliced. Toasted cubes of buttered bread are called croutons. They are somewhat greasy and are spooned over food and added to salads. You do not touch the croutons with your fingers. Rolls and muffins, which are soft, are broken in half with the fingers. Pull bite- size pieces from the half and butter is added one bite at a time. No butter is required for bread sticks, which is a sweet dough. If butter is desired the butter is applied at the end of the stick, one bite at a time. The etiquette rule is to gently break the stick in half. Dry toast or a soft sweet pastry is cut in half or quartered. Hot toast and hot sweet rolls are buttered without being cut and are held by the sides. With Marvelously Good Thoughts, Queen Grace
