The second two major school buildings in Kirksville were built in 1899 and were another set of look-alikes. They were the first Willard School on Centennial St., and the High School which was on Normal St. where Greenwood is. These two buildings were constructed from the same design and by the same contractor in 1899 & occupied in 1900. (The first two major school buildings, as previously discussed, were Benton & Washington which were also identical to each other. See previous post.) The High School building shown here was converted into the first Greenwood Elementary School when the High School was built on McPherson St. & occupied in 1916. Both of these old elementary buildings were only used 34 years and were torn down in 1934 for the construction of the present buildings we all know as Willard and Greenwood Schools. Again, the new buildings were very similar, except that Greenwood got large white columns out front and Willard did not.
