The sign of a good team is to win convincingly without a convincing performance. Last week against Obelix, bodies were battered and the minds drained by the discipline to win in the face of adversity. Today was always going to be a difficult task. A team depleted by injury and absence, RCE took on a Bekaro team that was – looking at recent results – improving after a false start to the season. When you set yourself at the top of the tree, everyone is looking to knock you off your perch. So, the question was, how solidly are we sitting on our perch? The first 15 to 20 minutes suggested we were a bit off balance. Despite a quick pushover try by captain and Nr 8, Stef, we did not dominate as we had done, even against Obelix last week. Still, Lars and Frank added a couple more to put RCE in front by what might have appeared a comfortable 17-0. But Bekaro hit back to score a converted try and reduce the difference to just 10 points. The match took on a different complexion. Bekaro were tackling fiercely and RCE had difficulty finding its rhythm. But that’s the quality of a good team – even when not hitting the amazing standards set so far this season, RCE added another two tries (by Thomas and Jeurgen) with Roel converting one, to take us into half-time at 29-7 (bonus point assured). Second half was an improvement by both sides and the quality of defending saw most of the game being fought out in midfield. It took some time before RCE reasserted its authority, expressed in a well taken try by Bart, converted by Roel. The dogged opponents fought really hard and made sure that RCE could not sit back and take a rest. Thomas struck with a try (again converted) to ease fears and leave the final score RCE 43 Bekaro 7. Not the best performance but a vital performance to score the victory with a bonus point and keep us at the top of the tree, and more solidly perched.
