The simple truth is not all great writers and poets are great - TopicsExpress

The simple truth is not all great writers and poets are great readers and speakers. As a Theatre guy I have noted this, many times. I prefer the poet to read his or her own work, but I wish they would practice reading aloud before performing. Above all, project and enunciate. Speak up, speak clearly, be proud of what you bring to the audience. I have also seen the traps of spoken word performance, ending the same cadence over and over again, and again, no matter the changing speaker or the different material. Perhaps it is a thing about the genre, or perhaps it is just a lack of willingness to break the spoken word mold. And one last thing, to make sure I have insulted all the people I did not intend to insult, if you are not African American, dont try to sound like you are, find your own truth in your own voice, let that be what emerges. PS: Screaming, really? No matter how good your writing is, you start screaming at me, Im outta there. I believe Los Angeles is a City of Poets, and we are all blessed by a Renaissance of brilliant writing. I think that for the most part, most writers do well to bring it, some need work, so work on it.
