The site of YOU makes them nervous; seeing ALL OF YOU makes them fearful. Do you not know the power your presence evokes? When will you awaken from your stupor or do you prefer the silence of a permanent slumber? Your prowess has never left you but lies within, waiting for you to remember the time when you ruled civilizations; stood tall when you were stolen from your land, sold on the auction block and then stolen again; when you walked bloodied into the Woolworth’s lunch counter, crossed that Edmund Pettus Bridge to freedom and into the ballot box! Remove the murk of failure, guilt and shame for it is not yours to own. Don’t foolishly repress the sacrifices of you people when you’re entering through the front door, eating at that restaurant or just simply looking into the eyes of the person you are speaking to. Forgetting is perilous! Don’t rest on the laurels of your people. For there is still so much work to do. THEIR (your ancestors) laurels were purchased at an invaluable cost so guard them and continue to secure laurels for your own future generations. Our plight is not and has never been easy but has perfected our strength. Our song sounds best with more bass than treble; our dance more rhythmic without two left feet. Your light is being diminished but has yet to been distinguished. Without sufficient oxygen, a fire cannot begin, and it cannot continue. Thankfully and mercifully, we are replenished by the second. Please make your presence known and felt, sacrifices count and your voice heard; not just for this time but always!
