The state of Texas argues that because this schizophrenic inmate (with evidence of psychotic behavior stretching back years before he killed two people) has shown moments of lucidity, hes fit[] to be executed. At the time of his trial, they allowed him to waive his right to representation and he conduct[ed] his defense dressed as a cowboy in a purple suit and a hat... and attempt[ed] to call... John F. Kennedy, the pope, Anne Bancroft, and Jesus Christ as witnesses. The jury was terrified of him and sentenced him to death (back then in Texas, there was no life without parole). Why does it feel like Texas is always racing to the bottom? Cant we have a little mercy? Instead we compound the tragedy of his victims deaths with the barbarous act of executing a person who was not and is not in his right mind.
