The terrible truth about Iraq is that we lost it the day we invaded. Actually, we ruined it--the Sunni and Shiite antipathy had long been there, and it was inevitable it would resurge. We will now have to live with the future that we enabled. There is nothing we can do to put Humpty-Dumpty back together again. Air strikes wont change anything, troops would be unforgivable, and any shared government will be a short stopgap. Iran is the only power that can have a considerable influence there. We dont know how to change that part of the world for what we see as the better in our interests. We lost credibility ages ago, and weve done just about nothing to learn from our terrible errors.
