The threat of extremists conducting terror acts half a world away has Australia in turmoil and has given the Conservative Govt fresh legs, theyll soon be using it as an excuse to get their own sad act of torture, the blatant attack on the poor called The Federal Budget, to pass thru the Senate. However an editorial by Jonathon Green quoted by Tony Walker has clarified the issue for me...querying that/why The Labor Party, while opposing everything the Coalition stands for, has jumped in to support every thing regarding the war on terror including fascist proposals to make fascist changes to security laws, and as has been noted in fb, we note the irony that the beheaded journalist videos will lead to journalists being jailed for what they write in this country if the law changes get thru...the answer to all this is contained later in the same article referred to above: ...of course the problem with the lone wolf phase of this war on terror: that we are confronted by the menace of individuals, unknowable and elusive. Thats the problem, but also the inherent contradiction: they are still only individuals. Their acts of violence, if and when they come, will be criminal acts. No more or less....so theyre just thugs. Whether theyre juvenile delinquents, street nazis, gangbangers, football hooligans or some other name for disaffected shitkickers, do we need an extra billion dollars for ASIO, an extra 500 police at sport events etc etc, our reporters jailed, our freedom destroyed to protect our--guess what? --our freedom?? and significantly (1)an excuse for the rigt wing to impose their pathetic tax cuts on the poor?? (2) misplaced kudos for a pathetic failed governing political party to go to the next election claiming to have unified & protected the country when its just smashed a wedge thru the joint.
