The three-year term of Australia’s first national security monitor, Bret Walker QC, has now expired and the Abbott government has scrapped the position. That decision is perhaps unsurprising given Mr Walker’s criticism of the Abbott government’s policies, including the ‘control order’ regime. But recent proposals to increase ASIO’s powers have prompted calls for the restoration of the position or the introduction of a special committee to oversee those powers.
