The trigger man didnt see a child. He saw a lethal threat to be put down like a dog, or in the immortal words of Dan Wilson, A demon. He had primed himself to pull the trigger as the car drove to the scene. Racist? He might not have been thinking to himself, Im going to get that nigger! as he pulled the trigger, but if it had been a white child holding that airsoft pistol, something in his head would have clicked. He would have hesitated and sought a solution, because he would have seen a boy with a future; a child doing what kids do; a child who would be missed. Or, maybe, he would have seen himself. But he wouldnt have seen an IT. And it is easier to shoot an IT, or a demon, than it is to kill a boy with a beautiful future. By the way, thats what racism is. The propensity for people in power to see young people of color as ITs.
