The two most beautiful words that describe Allah, Ar-Rahman & Ar-Rahim. Before beginning every surah we say bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahiim. In the name of Allah, the Ar-Rahman and the Ar-Rahim. Both these words begin with the root word, Rahm, which means a mothers womb. Just like a baby is covered from all sides in its mothers womb, just like it is protected and loved and cared for in every possible way, Allah takes care of us in every possible way. A babys food, health, & well-being completely depends on its mother, in the same way, we depend upon Allah for all of our needs. And He fulfills them. How many of us thought that rahma just meant mercy? When from Allahs side it means that He covers us entirely in His love, in His protection & in His care & affection. Ar-Rahman means His love is extreme, it is unusually loving, excessively loving! But it also means His love is being manifest right now, even this moment while youre reading this-this love is immediate. But whats scary is that it also means that this extreme love is not permanent. Ar-Rahim, on the other hand means His love is permanent, but not immediate. But the beauty of these words is that Allah put them together, to convey to us that today He is Ar-Rahman and tomorrow, He is Ar-Rahim. He will take care of you today in your present, & He will take care of you tomorrow in your future! When ibn Abbas was asked what these two words mean, He said, Ar-Rahman is for the people of this world and Ar-Rahim is for the people of the Akhirah. We worry about the present, and if the present is taken care of, we worry about the future. Allah says He takes care of both, alhamdulilah, Are we not wrapped up in the love and the mercy of Allah?
