Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the LORD has sent to go throughout the earth.” And they reported to the angel of the LORD who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have gone throughout the earth and found the whole world at rest and in peace.” Zechariah 1:10-11 (NIV) The primary message here is that the God is about to come to the assistance of the post exiled Jews in restoring the temple and the cities. God is comforting and assuring them with watchful care to a people who have been waiting a long time for God to lift his judgment from them. They are looking forward to God prospering His people. Israel’s major crops were grain, grapes for wine, and olives for oil. They depended on these crops for security while neglecting the worship of God. Therefore, God sent a drought to destroy their livelihood and call them back to Him. As believers were are much like the nation of Israel. When things are going great we lose sight of the need to worship the Lord. When out financial needs are being met and things are going right it is easy to forget God. However, when times get tough people often look for God to help them out. This is also true of a nation, when we were ruthlessly attacked on 911 people streamed to churches, but with a few weeks they stopped filling the churches. In a lot of ways they have become comfortable with the enemy and have gotten into bed with them. Much like the Israelites sought the pagan Gods of their neighbors. We have allowed ourselves to compromise our Christian beliefs as a nation and allowed multicultural religions to have their way. Do we have to wait for judgment from God or are we willing to pray and seek Him for deliverance.
