Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her - TopicsExpress

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making a request of Him. And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She aid to Him, “Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your left.” But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to Him, “We are able.” He said to them, “My cup you shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father.” Matthew 20:20-23 (NASB) In spite of Christ’s faithful warning that death awaited Him, John and James, two of His most intimate disciples, showed that they did not comprehend His words and, as a matter of fact, were planning on something which was quite the opposite. The Jewish concept of the Messiah lay deep within them, and they had attached their own personal fortunes to that prospect. They used their mother to be their spokesperson. They even used childlike ruse of asking for a blanket promise in trying to get Jesus to promise them whatsoever they should desire. When they told Him they wanted to sit one on either side of Him in His Kingdom, He told them frankly that they did not realize what they were asking. They desire a position of material power in an earthly kingdom, but His Kingdom was that place of rulership which He was to purchase with His death upon the Cross.
