Theology that has no bearing whatever on human life in this world can only be a theology of deism -- if that is not in itself a contradiction in terms. Conversely whatever can truly be called Christian theology must be, by its very nature, pastoral theology. Months of research into the true position of a comma in an ancient text may appear to have little to do with the needs of an ordinary congregation; yet it might, eventually and by devious routes and relations, have a certain practical -- possibly liturgical -- influence.
