Day 9, June 4, 2013 Beautiful sunny, breezy day and the Tom’s (S. & W.) are ready to start work. Tom W. approached the bathroom job a bit tentatively since his foot had gone through that floor on Day 2. Tom S. removed a pair of heating pipes from the room which later came in handy as “crowbars”! After attempting the pry, pull, lift, splinter method; it was decided to introduce power and Tom W. got his Sawzall plugged in! As sections of plywood flooring were gradually detached from the joists, the supports showed their weakness—like some were rotted all the way through! At this point M.A. was saying, “Don’t worry, they won’t drop” while Deena was praying, “Make them stop!” After a couple calls to the Horton House, Joe Summers arrived to survey the situation. Work was stopped and the door was blocked so that no one could make a quick, involuntary trip to the basement. A nearby area, which also needed removal, had been observed to feel springy under foot. The assumption was made that more rot would be discovered. As sheets of plywood were removed, the “springiness” was discovered – someone had put insulation batts between the layers of flooring. It was a relief to be working on safer ground! The demolition portion has been nearly completed on the first floor. A few walls of paneling to be removed in the Borning Room, bits and pieces of wood here and there need to go, a few nails to be pulled, and that darn bathroom floor to get out. The Peters House will then be on the road to interior rehabilitation-- Sue & Ruth have been measuring the parlors with Deena to see what will be needed.
