There are countless decisions that each of us make on a daily basis. Many will be easy and some will be difficult. But important decisions are not made in a vacuum absent the internal values of the decision maker. Walk out of a store by mistake with a $5 item and chalk it up as no big deal. If it isn’t a big deal, what are the odds that you would return an item that was $50 and unpaid for. When children are told never to lie, yet when approaching a counter that offers a discount for being less than a certain age you inform a child to say they are a different age than is true, it exemplifies your core value regarding the importance of honesty. Some decisions may seem insignificant, but they are a window to what decisions may be made when of real consequence. Decisions may be categorized into big or little, important or not, good or bad, and right or wrong. But whatever decisions you make, it is who you are. There is no proof that dishonesty or loose talk in small things or arenas ensures honesty in other areas. In fact, I would go so far as to say that small “inconsequential” decisions reinforce and strengthen the grip that character and values play in a person’s life. A good test is the very next time that a difficult decision is before you, make no split decision. Stop for as long as it takes to consider both sides of the equation, no matter how short or long it takes. If you do this and still choose the lesser valued option, you now know more truth about yourself than most people will ever stop to consider. May your days be blessed with truth and honesty, and always remember: Character Counts!
