There are many different types of lasers that are used for marking. The earliest arrivals were CO2 lasers, which are still used in applications that require high power laser, DPSS lasers and Lamp Pumped lasers are also being used in certain applications; however the crown jewel here is Fiber Laser Marking Machines. Fiber lasers usually have much shorter operating wavelength, which enables them to be used in much broader range of applications, and with wide range of materials. Furthermore, besides traditional surface marking, lasers can slightly burn (carbonize) a part’s surface, ablate or engrave it, produce a contrasting color change in it, or make marks below surface which doesn’t harm surface but leaves traces inside the material.
