There are stories of ghosts and poltergeists in Poole. One famous one occurred in the High street near what is now Kingland Crescent. The shop was an old building and I believe that its main business was selling household good like pots, pans, dishes and crockery. According to the story, as the Kingland bus station development proceeded the spirit grew restless and would cause whole shelves of pots and pans to come crashing down. It grew worse and worse until the shop was eventually demolished. (so the story goes). I am not sure of the date of this story. I read about it and there were attempts to placate the angry spirit. Isnt it maddening that when you desperately need an angry spirit to stir up the powers that be they simple are never to be found! But another concerns my uncle who when a young man rode his bike to and from work in Upton along the Blandford rd, Hamworthy. It was the proverbial cold Hamworthy mid evening and visibility was not good due to thick fog. There were no street lights. He had a light on his bike and he knew the road very well. His mother, my grandmother (in number 104) was shocked when he appeared at the door covered in mud and was quite severely grazed. He explained that he had crossed over the railway line and was coming slowly down into Hamworthy when a man in a helmet carrying a sword suddenly and without any warning appeared on his left and walked in front of him causing him to go off the road left and into the ditch. It was not until some weeks later when my much older father walked up there with him to the scene told him that the Roman road crossed the Blandford rd at that point.
